I Who Have Never Known Men av Jacqueline Harpman - ikke noe spesielt

'But will talking teach us anything about what we're

doing here? You have no more idea than I do or any of the

rest of us do.'

I Who Have Never Known Men fikk mye oppmerksomhet i fjor, spesielt på Goodreads.

We Used to Live Here av Marcus Kliewer - lovende start, men seigt mot slutten

Thomas shook his head. "We've long overstayed our time limit, kiddo."

He motioned his family toward the foyer. But as they filed out, he lingered

behind, hands in his pockets, eyes still on the basement door.

Ragnarok av A.S. Byatt - som å lese kjedelig pensum

They went so relentlessly fast, the thin child saw

and understod,, because they lived in perpetual

fear. Behind the sun, behind the moon, were wolves

stretched out in full gallop, their hackles bristling,

their tongues lolling, untiring, as wolves are in

pursuit, waiting for their prey to falter or stumble.

The darkness was absolute - her eyes refused to adjust.

It wasn't like London; there were no streetlamps outsie.

She was forced to inch along, feeling her way forwards.

Do You Dream of Terra-Two? av Temi Oh - ikke forvent mye science fiction

'I mean, probably not. It could suggest that a viral infection

is coming on. So they'll probably keep him in the sanatorium

until T-minus twelve, and monitor him just to make sure he can

fly tomorrow.' Poppy's brow furrowed. 'He'll probably be fine,

though,,' Juno added.

En slik avreise skjer uten dramatikk, eller?

The Toll House av Carly Reagon - stemningsfull hus med mørk bakgrunnshistorie

I'm jolted awake. There is a noise I cannot quite catch. My

heart thuds, my throat runs dry. I pull myself to my knees,

listening to the sounds of the house, the mice scratching in the

hallway, the wind curling its way through the letterbox.

The Book of Accidents av Chuck Wendig - ingen typisk horror om vanlig hjemsøkelse

"Cool, cool," Jake said. "You live around here?"

"Like - yeah, couple miles that way."

"Right. I'm the other direction. You know Emerald Acres? The

trailer park?"

"Sure," Oliver lied. He didn't know why he lied about that. It was

like laughing at a joke you didn't understand - just a thing people

did.

There was no one in the house and only two candles in the room

which had been so brilliantly lit. Her room was dim, with a shaded

candle by the be and another on the dressing-table. There was a

bottle of wine on the round table. It was very late when I poured out

two glasses and told her to drink to our happiness, to our love and the

day without end which would be tomorrow. I was young then. A short

youth mine was.

Noen romaner, men mest klassiske horror bøker.

House of Leaves av Mark Z. Danielewski - en ubeskrivelig, men stilig kultbok

Karen and the children a mere blur racing down the staircase, the

pointillism of their pets' paw prints caught on the dew covered lawn, or the

house itself, an indefinite shimmer, sitting quietly on the corner of Succoth

and Ash Tree Lane, bathed in the afternoon light.

House of Leaves.

David was loath to allow this man to covet Emily. He felt as

though he was betraying her, and he was certainly using her image

to inveigle this brutal rapist, this murdering beast, to at last speak

what truth he might know about her.

"Tell me, Ronny. Do the right thing. It won't cost you any-

thing to tell me. Is this woman one of the fourteen bodies you've

hidden?"

The Other Emily ble utgitt i mars i år.

The Unquiet House av Alison Littlewood - svært uengasjerende fortellerstemme

Emma froze. Dreaming or not, now she did feel cold. There

was another presence in the hallway below; she could sense

hostility. She could almost hear them breathe. And then the

words came again, so clearly they might have been spoken next

to her ear:

    Get out.

The Way of Kings Part One av Brandon Sanderson - komplisert handling

' I saw others of your kind,' Kaladin said idly.

'Others? she asked, taking the form of a young woman. She began to

step around him in the air, spinning occasionally, dancing to some unheard

beat.

'Windspren,' Kaladin said. ' Chasing after the storm. Are you certain

you don't want go with them?'

She glanced westward, longingly. 'No,' she finally said, continuing her

dance. 'I like it here.'

He sat up, looked around, and at first thought this was another dream. It was his room - same blue wallpaper, same posters, same bureau with his Little League trophy on it - but where was the window? His window looking out at Rolf's house was gone.

Thus my mother and father. How could either of them atone to the other for having changed so much? For failing to be what was expected. How could there not be grudges? Grudges held silently  and unjustly, because there was nobody to blame, or nobody you could put your finger on. The war was not a person. Why blame a hurricane?

It crossed her mind to run after him but what good would that do? It was likely to make him more angry and she couldn't physically stop him from going. She wished she could pick him up, put him in the car and take him home as if he were a child. Perhaps she was being overprotective, although she was sure the doctor hadn't meant this when he'd said he could start regaining his independence by driving a little. Fearing for his safety, she returned to the car to call Andrew for advice. He'd know what to do.

'What about Clare Cassidy?' I say.
He stopped fidgeting and went suddenly completely still. 'What about Clare?'
    'What's your relationship with Clare?'
    'We're colleagues, friends. That's all.'
'She's a good-looking woman,' said Neil, all laddish chumminess.
'Is she? Yes, I suppose she is.'
    'Ella Elphick too.'
    'Yes.'
'What will Clare say if we ask her about your relationship with Ella?" I said
Rick seemed to control his voice with an effort. 'She'll say we were friends because that's the truth.'
He wouldn't budge after that. It was frustrating but it's a long game. We told him he was free to go.

    "Hello?"
"Jay Cee here," Jay Cee rapped out with brutal promptitude. "I wonder if you happened to be planning to come into the office today?"
I sank down into the sheets. I couldn't understand why Jay Cee thought I'd be coming into the office. We had these mimeographed  schedule cards so we could keep track of all our activities, and we spent a lot of mornings and afternoons away from the office going to affairs in town. Of course, some of the affairs were optional.

'For some weeks I led a miserable life  in the woods, endeavouring to cure the wound which I had received. The ball had entered my shoulder, and I knew not whether it had remained there or passed through; at any rate I had no means of extracting it. My sufferings were augmented also by the oppressive sense of the injustice and ingratitude of their infliction. My daily vows rose for revenge - a deep and deadly revenge, such as would alone compensate for the outrages and anguish I had endured.

    She sighed, dissatisfied.
"Not what you wanted to hear?" he asked, mouth curved in a wistful smile, sadness lurking in the shadow beneath his eyes.
    "It's not that. It's just - it's hard."
He nodded. "I know," he said. "But you are a scientist. You understand how this works. We study the universe in order to know; yet in the end the only thing we truly know is that all things end - all but death and time. It's difficult to be reminded of that." - he patted her hand where it lay on the table - "but it's harder to forget."

Science fiction er avanserte greier ...
